1966
Founded by P&G Scientist, Herbert Quinn
Q Laboratories was established by former Procter & Gamble scientist Herbert Quinn, who set out with a vision to deliver high-quality microbiological testing services. Starting the business in his basement with only water testing, his scientific rigor and commitment to accuracy laid the foundation for a company built on technical excellence, trust, and client partnership. The “Q” in our name carries forward his legacy.
1985
Acquired by Mike Knight, Senior Management
Longtime senior manager Mike Knight purchased Q Laboratories, ensuring seamless leadership continuity. With a vision for expanding capabilities and meeting the evolving needs of clients, Mike guided the company into a new era of growth. His leadership not only strengthened Q Laboratories’ reputation for client service, scientific integrity, and reliable results, but also laid the groundwork for building a new laboratory in the years that followed.
1988
Expansion into Analytical Chemistry & GMP Quality Standards
Q Laboratories expanded their service offerings with the introduction of analytical chemistry testing and the implementation of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) quality standards. This was also the year we began testing personal care products, laying the foundation for the company’s long-term strategy of supporting clients in highly regulated industries. Operations moved to 2014 Harrison Avenue, marking a pivotal step toward becoming a trusted partner for businesses requiring advanced regulatory compliance.
1997
Relocation to 1400 Harrison Avenue
As demand grew, Q Laboratories relocated to a larger facility just down the road on the same street at 1400 Harrison Avenue in Cincinnati. The move not only provided the infrastructure needed to house expanding laboratory capabilities and a rapidly growing scientific team but also brought new life to a building that had been a Cincinnati West Side staple since the early 1900s. This blend of history and innovation symbolized Q Laboratories’ commitment to both its community and its future.
2000
A Chemist’s Leadership Through Transition
Following the untimely passing of Mike Knight, longtime senior manager and analytical chemist by trade, Dave Goins acquired Q Laboratories. His leadership ensured stability during a difficult transition and carried forward the culture and values that Mike had strengthened. Under Dave’s stewardship, the company continued to grow, guided by technical expertise, a commitment to innovation, and a relentless client-first mindset.
2010
Capacity Expanded to 25,000 sq. ft.
Q Laboratories’ service model was bursting at the seams as client demand and capabilities rapidly grew. To meet these rising needs, the company expanded its footprint to 25,000 square feet with the construction of a new laboratory facility built on the same site at 1400 Harrison Avenue. This strategic investment allowed for enhanced capabilities, optimized workflows, and greater service flexibility, all while maintaining continuity in location and operations.
2017
Cincinnati Investment Group Acquired 75% Ownership
Q Laboratories welcomed a new chapter of growth as the Cincinnati Investment Group comprised of local investors focused on strengthening the Cincinnati community acquired a 75% ownership stake. Unlike traditional private equity, their approach emphasized long-term investment in people, infrastructure, and innovation. This support accelerated development across core areas, including IT, HR, and other key departments. Dave Goins retained a 25% ownership stake and remains an active investor.
2018
Opening of 30,000 sq. ft. Laboratory at 1911 Radcliff Dr.
A defining milestone in Q Laboratories’ evolution, the opening of the 30,000 square-foot facility at 1911 Radcliff Drive launched the company onto the national stage. This state-of-the-art expansion created a unified, single-site campus bringing Microbiology, Chemistry, and Stability services together on one campus. The integrated layout enhanced collaboration, streamlined operations, and preserved the company’s hallmark service quality. This investment not only supported rapid growth but also positioned Q Laboratories as a premier, full-service partner for clients across the country.
2023
Strategic Rebrand and Content-Driven Thought Leadership
Q Laboratories launched a rebrand introducing a new logo, brand guidelines, and its first Marketing Manager, signaling a modern era of growth and visibility. More than a visual refresh, this move marked a strategic shift toward content-driven engagement. Through free, science-backed blogs and webinars, Q began sharing valuable insights with the broader scientific community. This initiative amplified the company’s national presence while reinforcing its commitment to service excellence.
2025
Expanding Capacity for Water Treatment and Stability
Q Laboratories advanced their long-term vision with the launch of a specialized Legionella Laboratory, serving as a catalyst for a broader initiative to become a leading Water Treatment laboratory across scientific disciplines. At the same time, the company expanded its Stability program with the addition of a new walk-in chamber, specifically designed to increase capacity for Personal Care and Pharmaceutical testing. These strategic investments, along with continued growth in the Household and Commercial Products market, reflect Q’s commitment to innovation, scientific excellence, and industry leadership.
